OpenAI launched its new AI-powered web browser, "ChatGPT Atlas," on Tuesday, which will directly challenge Google Chrome. Within hours of its launch, its impact was felt on Google's market value, which fell by ₹8.3 lakh crore.
What is OpenAI Atlas Browser?
OpenAI Atlas Browser is an AI-first web browser, specifically integrated with ChatGPT. This means you no longer need to switch tabs to understand a webpage or ask a question—ChatGPT will be with you on every page.
This browser has just launched for macOS users, and Windows and mobile versions are coming soon.
Most Special Feature – Agent Mode
Atlas’s most popular feature is Agent Mode, in which the AI can control your cursor and keyboard.
This means it can now book flights for you, retrieve product information, or even edit documents.
You just sit back and watch, AI will do the rest.

Why Google is facing competition
A large portion of Google’s revenue comes from search advertising. But AI-powered browsers like the OpenAI Atlas Browser are challenging Google’s ad model by providing direct answers.
After its launch, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) shares fell, and the company’s market value dropped by ₹8.3 lakh crore.
What’s next?
The OpenAI Atlas Browser could now bring about a major change in the world of AI and search.
While Google is strengthening its Gemini AI, OpenAI is preparing to offer users a new personalized browsing experience.
It will be interesting to see where this Atlas vs. Chrome battle unfolds in the future.
