Blast spoiled PSL night, match cancelled and questions raised on players’ safety
A drone attack near the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium this morning brought the 27th match (Peshawar Zalmi vs Karachi Kings) of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2025) to a sudden halt. According to local media and pictures going viral on social media, a restaurant and parking area near the stadium have been damaged in the attack. According to reports so far, there have been (two civilians injured) in the incident, but no player or staff has been hurt.
However, the incident has shaken the entire tournament. *The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) immediately decided to cancel the match and is now considering shifting the remaining matches to *Karachi or Dubai.
Foreign players wrote a letter to PCB: “Get us out of Pakistan immediately!”
After this attack, the players of England, Australia, New Zealand and West Indies playing in PSL are very worried about security. According to media reports, many big foreign stars have sent email to PCB demanding that they be immediately evacuated from Pakistan. These include:
- Englan’s Chris Jordan, David Willey, Sam Billings
- Australia’s Daniel Sams, Tim David
- West Indies’s Rovman Powell, Shai Hope
These players have also sought help from their respective cricket boards (such as ECB, CA, CWI). “Players say that they are not ready to play in “unstable conditions”.”
But foreign players are stuck!
PCB has clarified that Pakistan’s airspace has been closed for 48 hours, due to which no player can leave the country right now. The reason for this is the increasing military tension between India and Pakistan.
- PCB statement: “Everyone is safe, but the schedule may change” PCB spokesperson “Aamir Mir” told the press that:
- All players have been kept under “Pakistan Army’s protection”.
- There are plans to continue the tournament, but “changing the venue” is being considered.
- “Karachi, Doha (Qatar) or Dubai (UAE)” are being considered as alternative venues.
- There is a discussion about holding the “final match (18 May)” in some other city instead of Lahore.
Why did the India-Pakistan tension increase? How did it affect PSL? The root of this whole matter is in the “increasing military tension between India and Pakistan”. Events of the last few days:
- Pahalgam terror attack (5 May) – 26 Indian soldiers killed in a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
- Operation Sindoor (7 May) – India carried out missile attacks on terror camps in Pakistan.
- Pakistan retaliation (8 May) – Pakistan carried out drone attacks on 15 military targets in India, including one near the Rawalpindi stadium.
- Airspace closed – Both countries closed their airspace, leaving foreign players stranded.
What will happen to PSL now? 3 possible options**
- Shift to Karachi – Easiest option, but security will remain a challenge.
- Moving to Dubai or Doha – Will assure foreign players, but PCB will suffer financial losses.
- Suspending the tournament – If the situation worsens, the PSL may have to be stopped.
Conclusion: Will cricket be able to rise above geopolitics?
This crisis of PSL 2025 is not limited to just one cricket tournament, but it is a direct effect of the growing tension between India and Pakistan. If the situation does not improve soon, then:
-Foreign players may leave PSL**, which will affect the quality of the tournament.
- International cricket in Pakistan may be in danger again.
- ICC and other cricket boards (ECB, CA, BCCI) may intervene in this matter.
At present, the eyes of the whole world are fixed on whether the game of cricket will survive swinging between politics and war?
